RUM N’ COKE COSTS GUYANESE MEN 4 YEARS IN PRISON & $17 MILLION

Rum-N-Coke-Arrest

Loric Williams and Chris Douglas, two former technicians at Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Guyana, are regretting their attempt to smuggle rum bottles onto an airplane bound for the United States. It wasn’t so much the rum that got them locked up. It was the cocaine that was the six kilos of cocaine mixed into them.

Williams and Douglas got caught up with the “mastermind” Keon Brewster last June. The Guyana Chronicle reported:

According to Police Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru, Williams along with the other accused Douglas works at the airport as AC technicians. He informed the court that the two men gave Brewster three bottles of Eldorado 5-year rum laced with cocaine to take to the United States. The transaction allegedly took place in the washroom area of the airport.

The court heard that Brewster was searched when the three bottles of the rum looked unusually thick. The prohibited drug was tested and proved to be the suspected cocaine. He allegedly admitted that he was indeed trafficking it to the U.S. and pointed out the other two accused as the persons who handed him the bottles.

The prosecution further informed the court that footage from the airport surveillance camera showed all the accused entering the washroom. It was also stated that the defendants admitted they were paid various sums of cash to play their part.

All three pleaded not-guilty to the charges, but Brewster had a change of heart and ended up pleading guilty. He was sentenced to four years in prison and fined $15,020,800 (Guyanese dollars; $72,493 USD). Earlier this week, Williams was sentenced to four years in prison, while Douglas was sentenced to four years and 11 months. Both were fined $17,020,800 ($82,145 USD), which equals three times the street value of the cocaine. Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan considered the time the duo had already spent behind the wall in her decision, according to Stabroek News.
